Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War has one of the most fun online multiplayer that the series has offered in quite a few years. This entry seems to have brought a lot of the gameplay back to its roots, featuring the traditional three-lane map design as well as many useful attachments, equipment, and perks.

For new players to the series or Cold War in specific, it can feel daunting and overwhelming diving into an online match against more experienced players. Fortunately, Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War has some fantastic load-out options that can really benefit new players. The upcoming weapon attachments, equipment, and perks can provide a helpful boost to new players.

10 Microflex LED

For most new players, a good weapon sight can go a long way to increasing accuracy and target acquisition. One of the earlier sights to unlock is the Microflex LED. This sight is a reflex-based one with 1.25x magnification and a thin frame. What makes this sight ideal for new players is the increased visibility.

While learning a new weapon using no sight at all might be a good way to get familiarized, the Microflex LED provides a nice clear target picture for fast aiming down sights. Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War offers a staggering number of sights from close acquisition ones to long-range options. For starting players, consider going for the good all-around Microflex LED.

9 Foregrip

Easily one of the best weapon attachments for new players to Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is the Foregrip. This weapon grip, which is one of the first attachments that unlocks, essentially improves recoil and accuracy. It might sound like a small incremental change when looking at the weapon statistics, but this Foregrip is a good all-around attachment.

The Foregrip provides enhances horizontal recoil control which can come in handy with some assault rifles and SMGs in the game. Eventually, you can unlock other grips that provide recoil control as well as other improvements, but for new players, this attachment is a great starting point.

8 40 Round Drum

The 40 Round Drum is a magazine capacity weapon attachment that can really help newer players since they won’t need to reload as often. This early unlock attachment comes in especially handy in SMGs that offer a high rate of fire, necessitating frequent reloads.

This drum magazine offers more ammunition per magazine. When using this attachment, the player also gets more starting ammo and higher ammo capacity overall. The one downside to this attachment is a slower reload animation due to the bulkiness of the drum. In this case, though, the pros more than outweigh the cons.

7 Speed Tape

Speed Tape is a weapon handle attachment that seems to be universally popular in Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War’s multiplayer. This attachment is one of the first you will unlock and provides for a quicker and more improved aim down sight time. Call of Duty is essentially a fast-paced, twitch-based shooter so every second of speed to aim down sights is critical.

The percent boost to aiming down sights might sound negligible but when coming up against an opponent who isn’t using the Speed Tape, that advantage absolutely helps. Some of the later handle attachments provide a bigger speed boost but ultimately come down extra downsides.

6 Stimshot

The Stimshot in Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War might be one of the most utilized, yet underappreciated tactical items in online multiplayer. This reusable stimulant has a cooldown of 11 seconds. With each use, healing is immediately restarted, getting you right back into the thick of the action in order to survive a bit longer.

Although the logic of getting injured and hiding until you are better rarely makes sense in most first-person shooters, it’s still a major component of the moment-to-moment gameplay. The Stimshot recharges quickly enough that you can typically stay in the fight much longer when used tactically.

5 Field Mic

The Field Mic is a cooldown-based field upgrade that can turn the tide of a battle when used properly. The Field Mic is a listening device that tracks and picks up enemy positions in a multiplayer match. Think of this upgrade as a stationary, mini UAV and you should get the idea. This field upgrade can be especially useful for new players who are still learning the layouts and choke points in the maps.

Many new players seem to enjoy using the Field Mic for modes like domination, control, or hardpoint because people tend to congregate near the capture points. The one major downside for the Field Mic is the three-minute and thirty-second cooldown. When used often and properly, it can help weed out opponents hiding.

4 Trophy System

In the Call of Duty series, positioning matters, especially in capture-based matches such as domination, control, and hardpoint. Due to this, many players spam grenades, flashbangs, and stun grenades in certain choke points. This is where the Trophy System can be particularly useful, especially for newer players.

The Trophy System destroys thrown enemy equipment such as grenades within a ten-meter radius. While that distance may not sound like a lot overall, one Trophy System in a capture area can mean your team stays alive longer. Grenades, flashbangs, and stun grenades are used quite often in online matches so this field upgrade can certainly come in handy for new players.

3 Engineer Perk

Perks in Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War mostly come down to personal preference and playstyle. With that being said, one of the best line of defense perks is Engineer. New players should absolutely use Engineer because it helps to learn where other more experienced players lay down choke point traps such as landmines, C4, and gas traps.

The Engineer perk detects enemy equipment through walls and across the map, highlighting them in red. This perk is one of the first offered to new players but ends up being critical for learning how and where to detect frequently used equipment. Alternatively, the Engineer perk can also detect field upgrade items such as the Field Mic and Trophy System.

2 Gung-Ho Perk

The Gung-Ho perk is fantastic for first-time players due to its nature of focusing on speed and staying in the thick of the action. The Gung-Ho perk lets you fire your weapon and use your equipment while sprinting. You can also switch weapons much faster with the extra enhancement of being able to move at full speed while reloading.

Two other aspects that Gung-Ho helps with are taking less damage while falling and being able to fire more accurately while sliding. Considering Gung-Ho is one of the first perk options for new players, it’s a great addition to any player’s load-out due to its versatility and knack for speed and efficiency.

1 Ghost Perk

A widely used and very helpful perk in Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, Ghost makes the player invisible to UAVs while moving and tinkering with specific objectives. While Ghost may not be as comprehensive overall when compared to other perks in the game, it no doubt provides for a more stealthy approach for new players.

UAVs, which pick up player locations, are quite ubiquitous in most online matches because they are easily attainable for most players in a given match. Due to this, newer players will probably enjoy using the Ghost perk to stay undetected while moving around the map and learning its layout.
