Bungie may be best known for their work on the Halo and Destiny franchises, but it seems like they’re ready to work on something new. Multiple job listings on Bungie’s careers page point to a new IP that features, amongst other things, a necromancer’s dungeon.
The first posting, looking for an Incubation Investment Designer, is where the main detail behind the game’s setting is found. The posting has a clear description of its ideal candidates: “Living inside a giant database of hundreds of baubles, weapons, and armor is nothing new to you. And neither is building a system to cleverly distribute those items in a necromancer’s dungeon.”
Considering that one of the key responsibilities is to “Design, build, and tune a wide variety of pursuit and loot systems”, it seems like the game will have at least some RPG elements - similar to Destiny. It’ll be interesting to see how Bungie try to differentiate this game’s loot and equipment from their flagship franchise.
The second posting is for an Incubation Art Director, which hints at this new game being “something comedic with lighthearted and whimsical characters”. Certainly a change of pace for the developer when compared to their recent output.
In a possible hint at the game’s art style, applicants for this position must have “A dedicated interest and/or desire to explore possibilities of stylized (real-time) visuals”. This change in direction visually would certainly fit the lighter tone suggested by the game’s lighthearted characters.
A third ad is aimed more at the gameplay side of development, looking for an Incubation Senior/Lead Combat Designer to build Bungie’s “next great IP”. The successful applicant will be “part sandbox designer, part level designer, and part systems designer.” and must aim for “top-tier combat design”.
While none of these listings give much info on this new IP, we may already know its name. Back in 2018, Bungie filed an EU trademark for Matter, a project that hasn’t been heard from since. It’s not much of a stretch to assume that this is what the developer is hiring new team members for.
With the next season of Destiny 2 set to be announced soon, it’s certainly a busy time for Bungie, and it will likely be a long while before any more information surfaces on their new project.
