Fans of retro games rejoiced when Bug Fables got fully released on consoles. This game is pretty much the Paper Mario game fans have been wanting, but replaced with bugs. Everything from the battle system to the game’s art style inspired by the classic title.

The game even goes further by keeping classic mechanics, while streamlining them to work for a more modern audience. The characters are incredibly witty, the lore is deep, and the writing lets you forget that you are a group of adventuring bugs. Below are ten things you should know before you start playing Bug Fables.

10 It’s Long

Even though the price isn’t high, this is an actual full-length adventure that is around the same length as the original Paper Mario games. The average time to beat the main story is around thirty-one hours, and the game has about eight hours of extra content built-in to extend your playtime.

If you’re looking to save money, but want a great RPG, then pick this one up.

9 It’s Divided Into Seven Chapters

Much like the game that inspired it, Bug Fables is divided into seven different chapters. Each chapter is vastly different and follows a linear path. Every time you beat a chapter, more of the overworld will open up, and you will be able to take on more missions around the kingdom.

The main story is a fun tale of bugs who want to be adventures, but get a whole lot more action than they expected.

8 There Are Side Missions

While the main story is certainly fun to play through, the side missions are entertaining as well. Many of the side missions will have you running small tasks and learning more about the citizens of the kingdom. You could end up doing things like sleeping in an inn to give them feedback or delivering a book.

By doing quests, you can earn extra rewards to help you in the main game.

7 Leveling-up Takes A While

Leveling in this game doesn’t go fast even when you’re first starting out. The leveling system revolves around gathering adventure points. Every enemy you fight will give you a set amount of points, and you can expect to level up after you’ve fought around eight sets of enemies.

Once you level, you will also only be able to choose one stat to raise.

6 The Battle System Turn-Based

If you’re not a fan of classic-turn based battle systems, then you may still be able to enjoy this game. The turn-based system is made interesting by incorporating easy to use attacks, a quick-paced block system, and the ability to quickly switch through one of your three party members.

This makes for a much more interesting fighting system than normal.

5 You Will Need Items

This is the type of game where you’re going to need to pick up items regularly. The battle system almost requires players to heal themselves in the middle of boss battles. None of the party members have healing abilities, and you can cure status ailments unless you are carrying items.

Items are also the way you will need to heal in between most battles.

4 There is a Ton of Lore

This game does a great job of making you forget that the kingdom is filled with insects. The bugs all have distinct personalities and plights that are easy to get behind. The world is also well fleshed out, and you will even learn bits of history as you go through the story.

The side quests also help to bring the world even more to life, and you can learn quite a bit about how things work in the bug world.

3 Bosses Can be Rechallenged

Once you beat the third chapter, you will unlock the ability to rechallenge any boss that you have already faced. This lets you try bosses on the harder difficulty and is great for people who like to do timed runs. You can even fight the additional bosses in the game using this tool.

You will have to find the crystal for the fights, though.

2 Hard Mode Exists

At the very beginning of the game, you can talk to a bug inside the explorers guild to get your first metal. This metal won’t cost you anything to equip and is called hard mode. This will give all enemies you encounter more attack power while granting you more EXP for beating them.

This is great to use if you want more of a challenge or need to grind out a rank.

1 There is no Fast Travel

You will be doing a lot of walking, platforming, and puzzle-solving in this game. There is no way to really fast travel unless you have completed a chapter. Every time you beat a chapter, a tunnel will open that connects you back to the ant Kingdom hub.

Before a chapter is beaten, though, you are pretty much stuck in the location unless you want to waste tons of time walking.
