The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) has partnered with developer Motorsport Games to launch its own video game in 2022. The new release will be the first official BTCC game since TOCA 2 Touring Cars, which was based on the 1998 season of the British Touring Car Championship.
TOCA 2 Touring Cars, developed and published by Codemasters, allowed players to advance through the 1998 BTCC season and participate in the Formula Ford and the Ford Fiesta Championship. The new deal, which gives Motorsport a multi-year license to develop the BTCC game and related esport activities, is expected to be compatible with next-gen consoles, like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, as well as PC.
“I’m proud to say that the huge demand from the BTCC and TOCA game fans is being answered,” Alan Gow, Series Director and Administrator of the BTCC, said.
Like the original version, the new BTCC game will include all cars, teams, drivers, and circuits. Gow expressed his determination for the game to closely reflect the championship with “incredibly close non-stop action, intense competition and great enjoyment.”
TOCA 2 Touring Cars featured as standard cars the Audi A4, Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord, Nissan Primera, Peugeot 406, Renault Laguna, Vauxhall Vectra, and Volvo S40, and as support cars the AC Superblower, Ford Fiesta, Formula Ford, Grinnall Scorpion, Jaguar XJ220, Lister Storm, and TVR Speed 12.
Meanwhile, the tracks — Thruxton; Silverstone; Donington Park; Brands Hatch; Oulton Park; Croft; Snetterton; and Knockhill — are all real tracks in the UK. The game was noted at the time for featuring a four-player mode that used the PlayStation’s link cable and split-screen, allowing players to compete against each other using two PlayStation consoles connected to two televisions.
Motorsport Games also develops NASCAR Heat video game franchises and esports, such as 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual, eNASCAR Heat Pro League, World Rallycross Esports Series, ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge, #NotTheGP Series, and the Le Mans Esports Series.
Motorsport Games’ creative director, Paul Coleman, said the team was excited about the new game, adding that many were fans of the original TOCA game series. The news precedes this weekend’s BTCC 2020 season opener at Donington Park, which will be followed by a shortened calendar that includes 27 races across nine events.
