Most Bravely Default 2 players are going to have a lot of choices with healers and melee DPS characters, but many of the magic classes are severely underrated. There are all sorts of builds that can make spellcasters just as powerful as their physical counterparts, and many new passives can unlock this potential easier than before.
That being said, a spellcaster is only as good as their spells, but thankfully most of the mage jobs have some incredibly powerful attacks you can learn, especially when you unlock their final extra abilities in the postgame. If you want a powerful wizard on your team, you should really make sure they have at least one of these overpowered spells in their arsenal.
10 Flare, Freeze, And Burst (Black Mage)
If you want the most bare-bones powerful magic in the game, your first job class of Black Mage has exactly what you need. This class thrives on the most straightforward elemental attacks of Fire, Lightning, and Ice blasts, but once you unlock the final three spells you’ll see them go from straightforward to nearly overpowered.
Each of these fantastical strikes is absurdly powerful, and so long as you don’t accidentally target a foe that absorbs or resists the element you choose. They’re wonderful and equally-powerful strikes for any mage, and absolutely vital if you want a classic Black Mage on your team.
9 Triplara (Oracle)
While not as luck-based as the literal Gambler job, the Oracle class is very much a gamble in most fights. Its support utilities allow it to slow opponents and speed up allies, but that isn’t nearly as interesting as its three-pronged elemental Triple attacks.
Triplara is perhaps the most powerful for the ideal cost, dealing a combination of Fire, Electric, and Ice attacks with each cast. This makes it riskier against foes with unknown weaknesses, since it’ll ruin the attack if they absorb a single type of damage, but with proper caution this move can very easily eliminate most opponents in the game.
8 Holy (Spiritmaster)
Speaking of unexpected damage, it might surprise you that the support class of Spiritmaster is just as capable of dealing out ridiculous damage on your foes as well. This is entirely due to the spell Holy, which deals ludicrous amounts of Light damage that dwarfs nearly every other mage spell you’ll have received at that point in the game.
This is more of what makes Spiritmaster such an unexpectedly great sub-job, as it’ll give you a way to provide healing and resources to your team while having the option to go aggressive any time you need. This certainly isn’t the Spiritmaster’s strongest spell, but it’s still way higher than many others you’ll find.
7 Arise (White Mage)
There are all sorts of healing spells that can provide broken bonuses in most of the game, but few of these stand out among each other. This is because good enough stats or proper builds can make nearly any healing spell restore an entire party member’s health in one move, making many of them fairly irrelevant.
This is not the case for Arise, a fairly simple spell that White Mages learn that raises an ally from the dead with their entire maximum health restored. This is a godsend for those who take riskier strategies, like blowing through one’s own health with the new Hellblade class, and will immediately become your favorite move if you like taking riskier plays.
6 Zappable Chartreuse (Pictomancer)
The Pictomancer is very likely one of the more underrated classes in the game. It doesn’t deal as much damage as the other mages, and its utility is locked to single-targets, but you’ll often find their stat-decreasing moves do wonders on the game’s longest boss fights.
The best of these has to be Zappable Chartreuse, which lowers a foe’s Magic Defense by ten percent for each use. The reason this is better than a stat-raising Bard spell is that bosses typically have much larger stats than your team, so something that decreases it will often be far more significant when you plan to deal one type of damage on a large foe.
5 Mimic (Freelancer)
Technically speaking, Mimic isn’t really a mage spell the same way as the others on this list, but it absolutely fits with mages better than any other job type. This late-game Freelancer spell lets you copy whatever your last move is for zero cost, meaning you can potentially chain moves without spending mana or BP to deal maddening amounts of damage.
It’s a great with some of the spells that will appear later in this list, as they often have absurd MP costs that can be hard to use frequently against opponents that steal or decrease your mana. It’ll let you get the most out of your job whether you’re casting expensive sub-job spells, or just need a boost to maximize your main job.
4 Healaga (Red Mage)
Before getting into the best spells among all Mages, a special mention has to be made for Healaga, a special Red Mage spell that heals a target for 3000 HP every time. This might seem low when you hit health totals of over 9000, but it has a serious advantage over other healing spells by having a guaranteed amount every single time.
This means you don’t need to build into your Restoration stat to improve its powers, and is therefore usable by mage, tank, and even your melee DPS characters if you think they could use a healing ability for emergencies. It’s definitely not as effective as Arise, but it’s absolutely going to help you in more situations.
3 Disaster (Red Mage)
Something you might notice about the spells listed here is that there are a large number missing from the Arcanist job. This class has a large number that combine multiple elements and deal high damage, but this unfortunately comes at the cost of damaging your allies at the same time as your opponents, making them mostly unusable for most team builds.
This is what makes the final Red Mage spell, Disaster, so overpowered compared to nearly every spell in the game. This combines Earth and Wind damage for an extremely high power attack on a single target, and by lacking the collateral damage that combination spells usually have, it ends up being a remarkable tool against any boss that doesn’t resist either of these elements.
2 Bravebringer (Spiritmaster)
The actual best support spells in the game mostly belong to the Spiritmaster job, an overpowered healing class that can provide all sorts of resources to your team over time. While Holy is its main source of damage, being able to restore MP and BP to your entire team every turn cycle can give you a huge edge in pretty much any battle.
The ability to restore BP through Bravebringer is definitely the most unique of these effects, and with the second Spiritmaster Job Specialty you can have this spirit summoned without even needing to cast the spell itself. This will be a huge boon for your entire team, and make the long post-game battles of the game infinitely simpler.
1 Meteor (Arcanist)
Most of the spells belonging to the Arcanist are either too simple, or involve too much collateral damage to be considered useful, but Meteor is a huge exception. This attack deals several non-elemental magic bursts to random enemies, but against bosses this will still only hit that single target with multiple strikes on the level of the other strongest Mage spells in the game.
The one thing you have to be careful of with these kinds of spells is that Arcanists have Job Specialties that can sometimes cause attacks to hit your allies, so you’ll always want to have the your Meteor mage use this spell by casting it from a sub-class. If you go with the Red Mage to get the Chainspell job specialty to cast an extra spell for free, this spell has a strong possibility of killing the game’s hardest bosses in a single turn.
