Alistair Hammerlock, best known as simply ‘Sir Hammerlock,’ is introduced during Borderlands 2. The player meets him when they need someone to repair Claptrap’s eye, and he becomes a recurring quest-giver for the rest of the game. As a well-mannered man with a British accent and enthusiastic personality, Hammerlock quickly became a fan-favorite character.

There’s plenty of lore in the Borderlands games that the player would miss if they didn’t take the time to track everything down, or simply didn’t listen or read everything they did find. These details are some of what players might have missed about Sir Hammerlock when they were busy slaughtering their enemies.

9 His Family Is Extraordinarily Wealthy

Despite his ragged clothes and sparse, decidedly-not-flashy artificial limbs, Sir Hammerlock actually comes from significant wealth. The Hammerlock family was extraordinarily wealthy, and he likely grew up in the lap of luxury until he was an adult. Hammerlock grew up on a planet named Hermes, which had a thin, helium-rich atmosphere that would have been expensive to maintain livable environments on (not to mention the undoubtedly gorgeous view of a blue giant star).

8 His Sister, Aurelia

There’s lots to know about Aurelia Hammerlock, Sir Hammerlock’s sister. She’s older than him by a few years, making her the heir to their family fortune. This fact went to her head at a young age, so Aurelia bullied her little brother as they were growing up.

Aurelia appeared as a playable character in The Pre-Sequel before she was an enemy in Borderlands 3. As an adult, she’s developed the personality of an eccentric socialite; she loves to hunt dangerous prey and travel the galaxy.

7 References To Roosevelt In His DLC

In early 2013, Borderlands 2 received a new DLC called Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt. It’s meant for players who have already completed the campaign; it has the player killing exotic animals on a swampy continent named Aegrus.

Lots of things in the DLC are references to American history, and, more specifically, Theodore Roosevelt. A few examples are the military gang “The Rough Riders” and the political party named the “Bull Moose” party. It’s undeniable that Hammerlock and Roosevelt share a love of excellent mustaches.

6 The Reveal Of His Sexuality Was Subtle In Borderlands 2

The reveal in Borderlands 2 that Sir Hammerlock is gay is incredibly subtle, only appearing in optional audio content. Now that Borderlands 3 has been released, it’s much clearer — if fans have seen any of the content before they played it, or played it before going back to enjoy the rest of the series, they’ll be familiar with Hammerlock’s wealthy boyfriend, Wainwright. However, when he appeared for the first time in Borderlands 2, it wasn’t relevant to the main story.

5 He Calls Wainwright “Winny”

In Borderlands 3, Hammerlock has a boyfriend named Wainwright Jakobs. Wainwright and Hammerlock make an adorable couple; they understand each other, both having come from wealthy families.

Wainwright is the heir to the Jakobs Corporation. The name is familiar to players since they’ve been slaughtering their enemies with Jakobs guns for several games. Sir Hammerlock is hardly intimidated by this status and power — he calls his boyfriend “Winny.”

4 Wainwright’s Proposal Was Foreshadowed

Wainwright and Sir Hammerlock get married during the Borderlands 3 DLC, Guns, Love, and Tentacles. However, observant players already saw it coming. The first indication was during the end credits of Borderlands 3 — there’s a sketch in the background in which Wainwright proposes to Hammerlock. Then, during the Broken Hearts Day event (a seasonal event during February), players could get a Wedding Invitation for the men’s upcoming nuptials.

3 Gaige Has A Crush On Him

Gaige is a powerful mechromancer available as a playable character in Borderlands 2 (assuming the player has purchased her DLC). During two of the story DLCs for Borderlands 2 — Mad Moxxi and the Wedding Day Massacre and Sir Hammerlock vs. the Son of Crawmerax — Gaige will comment that she has a crush on Hammerlock. Thankfully, no one needs to break the news to her; she notes that she’s well aware that he’s gay. Hammerlock is very charming, so it’s not terribly surprising that a young woman like Gaige would be entranced.

2 His Pamphlet In The Ultimate Loot Chest Edition Of Borderlands 2

The Ultimate Loot Chest Edition of Borderlands 2 was sold for a limited time and included lots of goodies for dedicated fans. Among them was a pamphlet, entitled Sir Hammerlock’s Field Guide. It included lots of little details written in Hammerlock’s voice about the various creatures, plants, minerals, and more, that the player could find in Borderlands 2. His little musings include memorable quotes such as: “A rifle is the ONLY weapon” and “This would be a considerably easier predicament to handle if a dancing, unrepentantly annoying CL4P-TP unit were not my only company.”

1 His Family May Have Ties To The Dahl Corporation

The Dahl Corporation is a huge conglomerate that heavily features in the Borderlands game. They manufacture weapons, among many other things. During the Pre-Sequel, Aurelia can comment in passing that her mother sold the family business to Aurelia. While she isn’t specific about what kind of business they were involved in, the discussion was enough to make fans think that the Hammerlock family had ties to the Dahl Corporation. It was further supported because, in the Pre-Sequel, the Dahl Corporation is particularly important — they cause “The Crackening” of Pandora’s moon.
