If there’s one thing that Borderlands 3 can hang its hat on, its in the sheer volume of loot the game will throw at you. There’s guns, shields, grenades, money, ammo, and most in multiple forms and levels, but what about class mods? You probably found one or two of these early in the game, but have no explanation on how the work or how to use them. Here’s how to unlock the ability to use class mods, plus everything else you should know about these powerful upgrades.

Borderlands 3 Class Mods - What Do They Do?

Class mods are items that can boost your vault hunter’s skills in specific ways. When equipped, they can raise the level of certain skills within any of your skill trees, regardless of whether or not you’ve spent points in it or not. You can also use mods to boost skills to higher levels than the cap. These mods come in the same range of rarities as guns, so the more rare ones will offer better buffs.

Because class mods give points into specific skills, they are all restricted to individual classes. You’ll pick up class mods for classes you’re not playing as, so feel free to either trade them with friends or sell them off. The item level on class mods aren’t as important as they are for guns, and mainly depend on your preference. Once you find one that gives you the skills you’re happy with, you can stick with it for as long as you want.

How To Unlock Class Mods

Again, you’re more than likely going to pick up a class mod or two before you can even use them, but you won’t have to wait too long. If you continue the main story you will make your way off of Pandora and into the second of the game’s primary zones, Promethea. Upon landing you will take on the Hostile Takeover story quest.

This quest culminates in a boss battle against Gigamind, who will drop a class mod just in case you haven’t picked one up yet, and open up the locked slot in your character’s inventory where can equip class mods. Just open up your inventory and slot in whichever class mod you like and enjoy the buffs.

How To Get More Class Mods

Once you’ve defeated Gigamind, class mods will become available from just about every source of loot in Borderlands 3. That being said, you’re going to find the vast majority of them mixed in with the loot you’ll be sucking up along your journey from fallen enemies and looting chests. If you just keep playing the game like normal, and making sure to inspect the dozens of items littering the battlefield, you should have no shortage of class mods to pick from.

Two other ways to get your hands on more class mods without as much randomness is back on Sanctuary. The Golden Chest will begin to spawn them after you beat Hostile Takeover, but vending machines will also add them to their stocks. That could make it easier to find mods for your specific class if the drops aren’t working out in your favor.

Unless you have a friend to trade with, you might as well sell any class mods that don’t match your class. You obviously can’t equip them, and even if you’re running that character on another save there’s no way to transfer items between your own characters.
