There are many fans of the wild and chaotic Borderlands series and the latest game Borderlands 3 is racking up fans and popularity. Players can’t get enough of the colorful characters, intense gameplay, and endless loot grind.

While it has been praised by both fans and critics, there are some who have issues with different aspects of the Borderlands games. According to the unpopular opinion users on Reddit, there are a number of problems, mistakes, and changes that bring these wonderful games down a little.

10 Raid Bosses Are Bad

Among the most challenging opponents in the game are Raid Bosses. These beings possess massive health bars, can deal incredible damage, and often come with punishing combat mechanics. Even a well-geared team can have trouble fighting some of these foes.

Yet this user on Reddit is of the opinion that Raid Bosses can either be too simple or too tedious to fight. Instead of posing a challenge that requires tactics and clever plays, Raid Bosses can be long drawn out fights with the team losing due to lack of ammo rather than lack of ability.

9 Don’t Nerf Anything

Nerfing items is the primary method developers have to balance out aspects of a game. If a gun is too powerful, the developers can chip away at the damage it deals or give it a flaw to make it less appealing. It’s a common practice in any game where certain builds or metas become too powerful.

This Redditor is of the opinion that this is a mistake. Their primary reason is that the games are not PVP based so there aren’t any issues of fairness behind nerfing particular items. In their opinion if a player thinks something is overpowered they’re free not to use it, there’s no point in the developer making changes to incentivize them not to use it.

8 Lilith & Maya

During the story of Borderlands 3, both Lilith and Maya meet their untimely demise, although only the latter is confirmed to be dead. These popular characters were cut down in tragic circumstances that were intended to give the story more weight.

However, this Reddit user feels it was a mistake to kill these particular characters. They argue that the remaining characters are less meaningful and entertaining and, consequently, would have been better candidates to kill off.

7 Worlds Drops Tied To Bosses

In Borderlands 2, certain legendary items were tied to specific bosses. This meant the player had to grind that boss over and over again to get that particular item. With Borderlands 3, certain foes are capable of dropping any item in the game.

For this Redditor, this was a bad change. Now the player must grind a boss in the hopes that it’ll drop what they need and hope that it has the right prefixes they are looking for. When tied to a particular boss, they are more likely to get the item they’re looking for which cuts down on overall grind time.

6 The Campaign Is Great

For many players, the story campaigns are a means to get to the more interesting endgame. Some of the more popular walkthroughs and tips focus on how to complete the campaign as fast as humanly possible.

This individual on Reddit argues that players are missing out when blitzing through the storyline. The user also specifically praises the Borderlands 3 story, which tends to be quite divisive. The purpose of the Borderlands games is to interact with the characters, explore the world, and stumble across bizarre easter eggs or random side quests.

5 Everything Should Scale In Mayhem

In Mayhem mode, certain mechanics scale with each rise in difficulty while the player’s defenses and damage stay the same. The only way to gain more power is to obtain items that scale with each difficulty incentivizing the grind for loot.

This Redditor feels that Mayhem should scale everything. This enables the player to become more powerful as they beat higher and higher difficulties rather than grinding each time. It would allow more build types to be viable instead of just the metas.

4 Leveling Is More Fun

Many players consider the endgame grind of Mayhem difficulties and anointed gear to be the reason to play Borderlands 3. As a result, it’s important to rush the story and reach the level cap as quickly as possible.

However, this user on Reddit feels the leveling is more fun than being overpowered. In the endgame, the player is stuck with the same weapons, the same build, and the same strategy as they grind through the Mayhem levels. During a standard playthrough, any weapon, build, or strategy is viable on the path to the level cap and therefore more fun.

3 Legendaries Shouldn’t Be The Only Viable Gear

Legendary weapons and gear represent the pinnacle of their respective item classes. Legendary weapons are the strongest weapons, legendary shields are the strongest shields, and so on.

This Redditor feels the system is set up that only legendary gear is viable on harder levels. This means only a handful of weapons can ever be used as anything else isn’t strong enough. They would prefer a system where epic gear can also do the job, while legendaries just do it the better.

2 No New Characters

DLC Characters have become a staple in the games and can lead to new and unique playstyles. Krieg, for instance, allowed more aggressive and confrontational playstyles in Borderlands 2.

For this Redditor, they’d rather have the current characters be expanded upon with new skill trees rather than have new characters. Their argument is that the majority of players don’t touch new characters anyway and would prefer additional skill trees to alter the playstyles of existing characters.

1 Players Are The Problem

With each game, the player base is hungry for increasing difficulty levels and greater challenges. It’s only natural that after beating everything the game has to offer, players would want to see what else is possible.

For this user on Reddit, this incessant need is partially the cause of all other problems people have with the game. The reason only a handful of weapons are viable on higher difficulties is that players want the game to be more difficult. The reason metas exist is that players demand a harder game where only specific builds and load-outs can carry them through.
