Inti Creates has been hard at work on improving the already great Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 with post-release patches. The first one added a boss rush mode and this latest one is now upping the intensity for veteran players. Available right now on all platforms, the 1.3.0 patch welcomes the vicious LEGEND difficulty mode into this throwback sidescrolling adventure.

Described as a mode beyond the Veteran difficulty option (which emulates classic Castlevania), this should prove to be a real challenge for anyone that has mastered the game already. With multiple playthroughs tweaking various aspects of stage progression, it could almost feel like a new game.

Oddly, Inti Creates caught a bug in the 1.3.0 patch right as it was going live and had to issue a second hotfix. This is currently only available on PC and PS4, but the 1.3.1 update will let you experience this new mode without issue. On Xbox One and Switch, the LEGEND patch may cause Boss Rush mode to not auto-save or for file copying to not carry over the difficulty. The current workaround is to start Boss Rush, then exit. The hotfix should arrive shortly on both platforms.

Small bug aside, pairing LEGEND with Zangetsu mode should make that final episode a nightmare. That sounds a lot like the first game’s “Ultimate” mode, which gave you an overpowered Zangetsu, but then required you tackle the hardest difficulty from the start. It was easily the toughest run in the original.

I was perfectly fine without any of these additions, so I can’t complain. Curse of the Moon 2 is one of the better games of 2020 and I’m happy that fans are taking to it. I never expected to even receive a sequel, but I hope Inti Creates is able to keep making classic sidescrollers like it.

With no official Castlevania from Konami, the next best thing is Bloodstained. It doesn’t hurt that this retro-inspired romp introduced some features that improved the general flow, making it a far more enjoyable installment than some of the series’ best. Now, all we need is something in a similar vein to Rondo of Blood.
