Blizzard Entertainment has announced the cancellation of BlizzCon 2020, but some version of it may still happen online.
Blizzard Entertainment, the video game developer behind the Diablo series and World of Warcraft, will officially be calling off their annual gaming convention, BlizzCon. The convention began in 2005 and has operated as many other cons have—announcing content, holding creator Q&As, giving previews for games to come, as well as having contests, and concerts.
Back in April, BlizzCon Executive Producer, Saralyn Smith, announced that they were hopeful about being able to keep the con on amid COVID-19 lockdowns and extended isolation orders. But, as of this morning, BlizzCon 2020 is officially off. In light of health and safety restrictions and guidelines the company thought it best to err on the side of caution and call the whole thing off until it’s safe to rub elbows with fellow geeks once again.
Even though BlizzCon 2020 is off, the company is looking to online platforms to keep gamers connected. Along with having their hands in Summer Game Fest, a stay at home video game celebration, they’re also looking in to bringing the joy of BlizzCon online in some capacity as well as getting creative with supporting some of their regular esports competitions.
COVID-19 has shaken up the entire world, but Blizzard doesn’t want fans to worry as they are confident that BlizzCon will come again!
