Many shooter fans were interested in seeing what former Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski would create next. The game itself, Lawbreakers, picked up some positive feedback upon release, but launch numbers started poorly and continued to diminish. Now, Bleszinski has spoken about saving the game, but has talked about the difficulties found now that the gaming world is “in Destiny season.”
Bleszinski discussed the matter in a recent interview about the status of Lawbreakers, where the game’s concurrent user count was brought up. Asked how the designer felt about the low numbers of users for the game on PC, Bleszinski stated “I mean, so the thing is, is we’re now officially in Destiny season.”
Given the juggernaut that is Destiny in the industry, it’s perhaps understandable that creators of other multiplayer-centric games may feel as though the coming months are going to be a struggle. Destiny 2 was one of the most anticipated games of the year, and so a game like Lawbreakers that was already finding it difficult to pull in large player counts may not be seen as the best option for some.
Bleszinki, however, was able to talk further on the matter, as well as giving his opinion on Destiny 2.
This isn’t the first time that Bleszinski has discussed the differences between Lawbreakers on PC and PS4, either. Previously, the designer talked about how the launch of Lawbreakers had been humbling, and again stated that the game was faring better on PS4 than it was on PC. However, even if the game is doing better on console, developer Boss Key Productions will surely want to pump those PC numbers.
And God bless Bungie for the fantastic job they did. The first one I played for about a week and I was like, “Okay, I get the idea.” But, it looks like the second one addresses a lot of those issues and is a, really, knock it out of the park, especially with a really good frame rate on the PC version that’s forthcoming. But, in regards to that, it’s one of those things that there’s a situation where players look at numbers on Steam, that doesn’t happen on PlayStation 4. And I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but in regards to, you look at PC CCU health versus PS4, PS4’s doing fine. Because people just chop up, cough up 30 bucks and hop online and they just play and they don’t overthink it. On PC, there’s this immediately wanting to declare something a success or a bomb by this kind of internet culture that loves to just observe things.
Exactly how to build that player base, however, is another matter entirely, particularly with further challenges such as Call of Duty: WW2 on the horizon. Bleszinski hinted at promotional plans such as free weekends, as well as giving free codes to friends of those that already play the game, but it remains to be see as to whether those deals come to fruition, and whether they indeed help Lawbreakers reach the popularity it aspires to.
Lawbreakers is out now for PC and PS4.
