Despite earning strong reviews from critics, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) failed to live up to box office expectations. Birds of Prey wound up with a $201.9 million box office haul against an estimated budget of $82-100 million, which was significantly lower than other recent DC films. Considering this, it’s unclear if a sequel is in the cards, but if one is, we know one potential new character it will include.
According to Birds of Prey director Cathy Yates in an interview with The Wrap, she would like for a sequel movie to focus on the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. For the uninitiated, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have long had a relationship, with media as far back as the Batman animated series even hinting at a romantic relationship between the two villains.
Presumably, the Birds of Prey sequel would also feature the titular Birds of Prey again, though other plot details are scarce at the time of this writing. It should be stressed that Birds of Prey 2 has yet to even be announced yet, and so it’s unclear if it will actually be produced.
Even if another Birds of Prey movie isn’t released, fans will still get to see Margot Robbie play Harley Quinn on the big screen. Margot Robbie is set to reprise the role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie from James Gunn, which is currently set to release on August 6, 2021.
Birds of Prey is available now on digital home media.
