A great date is one that has the couple doing an activity together. Unlike a more static activity, such as seeing a movie, taking on some kind of lighthearted challenge or exercise can actually help you learn about the other person. How do they process information? Are they one to share the workload or go it alone? And is that all compatible with how you approach things? Biped, a co-op exploration puzzler, may help you figure your crush out. Or it might just give you a few good laughs.
Biped puts the players in the role of a pair of robots who must activate machines scattered around planet Earth. Getting to these machines often involves solving environmental puzzles made for two. Maybe one player has to press specific switches to create temporary platforms while the other one crosses them one-by-one. Or maybe the duo has to stand on a floating platform that shrinks unless there’s a specific number of feet on it. Oh yeah, the players control their robots one leg at a time.
Biped is now available on the Nintendo Switch, where controlling robots one leg at a time takes getting used to. The natural instinct with a co-op Switch game is to give each player one Joy-Con half. This makes the players use the shoulder buttons to activate the legs, which doesn’t feel quite so intuitive. There will be a lot of falling into bottomless pits during puzzles that require precise timing. Fortunately, lives are unlimited so players can make as many mistakes as they need.
The Switch tends to be a hub for local multiplayer, making Biped’s debut on the system a good event for date night. The characters and settings are silly and adorable, with no chance of offending anyone. The simple concept invites players of all skill levels. The fact that many puzzles require synchronization will foster communication. By all accounts, Biped can make for a fun evening and good litmus test for a couple’s rapport.
Or you can just play it solo. Honestly, it controls a lot better in handheld mode anyway. But if you’ve already played Snipperclips and exhausted Animal Crossing, then Biped is a good way to kill time until you can gather at a bowling alley or theme park again.
