It may only be a tweet, but we now have confirmation that progress is being made on the next title in the Dragon Age series. Ever since 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, there has been very little information about the future of BioWare’s epic fantasy series.
The first game was a massive hit with fans for the depth of choice and well written characters, but the team was forced to rush out a sequel that failed to live up to the original for some. The third game was a return to form, garnering plenty of critical praise and winning many game of the year awards.
While it may not be a new trailer or story information, a Tweet from executive producer Mark Darrah at least confirms that Dragon Age is not dead. He sympathies with the hunger for news on the series many people have, but can only offer a few vague bits of information. First is that they are still working on the next installment in the Dragon Age series, and that they “are making progress”. He also expresses that working from home is making things more difficult.
A teaser trailer for a new Dragon Age called ‘The Dead Wolf Rises’ was shown off at The Game Awards back at the end of 2018, but aside from that nothing substantial has been shown or said about the game. Darrah said in a blog post, also from 2018, that they had been working on the game already for “quite a while”. The only news in 2019 came out of an earnings call where EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said that this new Dragon Age game probably wouldn’t be released until after April of 2022.
The state of BioWare’s output has been a fairly rocky one this generation between Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, plus every Dragon Age since the original has had some sort of development struggles. All that makes the fact that even EA doesn’t foresee the game arriving until sometime after April 2022 believable. At this point, all we can really hope is that the team is doing their best to make a new Dragon Age while not being forced to rush or crunch in order to get it out.
