Since the PlayStation 5’s controller is a big departure from past iterations, plenty of fans were bound to be skeptical. Many were outright angry, quick to point out design flaws from the current DualShock that weren’t addressed for the next generation. However, Pete Hines — Senior Vice President of Global Marketing & Communications at Bethesda — recently had a chance to go hands-on with the DualSense and was “very impressed” with its performance.

Although the aesthetics might be polarizing, the DualSense does have plenty of cool features. Haptic feedback will allow for wide range of rumble strength and location on the controller. Adaptive triggers bring more immersion to actions such as “drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.” Plus it comes with a built-in microphone and a USB-C connection. As far as features, it looks like a great entry-level controller.

Twitter user @DCDeacon asked Hines if the controller felt different compared to the PS4 controller. Hines replied that you’ll “immediately forget about a PS4 controller,” and that players will, “just want to use the PS5.” That’s a pretty bold statement, but it certainly makes us excited to go hands-on with the DualSense.

Whether games will take full advantage of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers is another question entirely. Hines says that he thinks developers will do “some really cool things with them,” and we certainly hope he’s right.
