Last week, Bethesda revealed the 2020 roadmap for Fallout 76’s content updates and it included plans for new “seasons.” Taking the form of the commonly used battle pass from other games, it seems some players were confused about whether they would need to pay for these seasons or not. Thankfully, Bethesda’s heart isn’t completely made of coal, and the company has clarified that each new season will be free.

The confusion arose from the wording Bethesda used. In the reveal, the company stated that players could “take part in our inaugural Summer Season for free.” That led some to speculate the fall and winter seasons would be paid, which isn’t the case.

The main way that Bethesda is looking to monetize Fallout 76 moving forward is through microtransactions that will let players rank up in each season. You’ll still be restricted from doing so for the first two weeks (Bethesda claims this is to put everyone on level footing), but that’s about the only monetization method. You won’t be paying for the privilege of playing each season.

So that’s nice to know. I don’t think Bethesda wants another PR firestorm like the one Fallout 76 launched with. It’s just very odd that it took almost a full week for this clarification to happen.
