Trivial Pursuit has been a staple of game nights and family gatherings since it was first released in the 1980s. Nearly 40 years and numerous editions later, including travel versions, the game remains a go-to for board game players.
However, not all of the editions out of the 100+ catalog were created equal. In fact, some stand head and shoulders above the rest. If a property has a big enough fanbase, it likely has earned itself a dedicated Trivial Pursuit release. It could be argued that there is a version of Trivial Pursuit available to complement every group’s needs, but which ones are the best?
10 Trivial Pursuit World Of Warcraft
Being one of the biggest MMORPGs, World of Warcraft is no stranger to crossing over into other media formats. World of Warcraft has also appeared as an edition of the classic property-buying board game Monopoly.
The World of Warcraft edition of Trivial Pursuit is great for fans of the game as it tests your knowledge of things like geography, lore, and characters. The game also features nice little touches to give it that WoW feeling, as you use baby Murloc pieces to move around the board.
9 Trivial Pursuit Back To The 80s
The 80s were a defining decade, with world-changing moments that spanned film, TV, music, as well as world events. It’s a time in history that many are nostalgic for, even if they didn’t actually live during it themselves. Media is in part responsible for the revival of interest in the decade, which is why this edition also acts as a Stranger Things version.
This edition of Trivial Pursuit, at first glance, seems no different from any other, besides the categories. The categories include films, TV, music, famous people and events, trends, tech and fun, and Stranger Things. The game does crossover with Stranger Things in a unique way through the use of portal spaces. When you land on these spaces, the board gets flipped, transforming it into the Upside Down where wrong answers result in you losing a token.
8 Star Wars Classic Trilogy Collector’s Edition
In recent times, the Star Wars series has had its struggles. The latest film entries have been polarising, although there have been some great Star Wars games recently. This Trivial Pursuit edition is solely about the original trilogy and was made before Phantom Menace had its name revealed. The box of this edition advertises that it includes a ten-card collector’s pack with Q&A for “Episode I – the prequel.”
Instead of a die, this edition uses an R2-D2 randomizer that you use to determine how many places you move one of the four pewter tokens, which of course, includes Darth Vader. As part of the game, you will get asked questions out of a pool of 2,000 alongside 100 photo cards depicting scenes from the movies to test your knowledge. The six categories of questions are weapons and vehicles, droids, creatures and aliens, history, characters, and geography, although there is also an additional wild card.
7 Trivial Pursuit – Disney For All
Disney is enjoyed worldwide by people of all ages and backgrounds, and this edition of Trivial Pursuit acknowledges this fact. It aims to be as accessible as possible, specifically targetting families with young children.
Unlike other editions of Trivial Pursuit where questions are asked from different themed categories, this version uses three unique categories that are played differently. The Disney List category gets you creating a list or choosing two items that don’t belong in a list. The Take 2 Trivia gives you two chances to earn a token, first with a Disney-related question which, if you don’t answer correctly, is followed by a general knowledge question. The final category is My Disney, in which your team is tested on their knowledge of you as they have to guess your answer to a question.
6 The Lord Of The Rings Movie Trilogy Edition
There’s a lot in the works to be excited about for fans of the fantasy series, including a Lord of The Rings anime. A perfect way to get yourself ready is to brush up on your knowledge of the series with this edition of Trivial Pursuit.
The Lord of The Rings movie trilogy edition includes over 2,400 questions, including 600 interactive queries across two DVDs. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about repeated questions during your plays of the game for some time. The myriad of questions come divided across six categories of good characters, evil characters, places and history, things, warfare, and making movies.
5 Book Lover’s Edition
The Book Lover’s Edition of Trivial Pursuit is exactly that – a perfect game for budding bookworms. Other editions of Trivial Pursuit tend to focus on media forms such as film and music, often leaving the avid reader out. This version rectifies that and gives a game for those that enjoy nothing more than reading.
This Trivial Pursuit doesn’t have the gimmicks of the others but is instead a straightforward game purely focusing on the written word. The game features over 2,000 questions in six categories: children’s, classics, non-fiction, book club, authors, and book bag. The game comes with four book-themed player pieces, which include a stack of books and a typewriter.
4 Trivial Pursuit: The Beatles Collector’s Edition
The Beatles are often cited as the most influential band of all time, and for a good reason. The stars from Liverpool in their decade-long career released some of the most successful and critically acclaimed albums the world has seen, changing the face of music forever.
This edition will really test those who call themselves Beatles fans. Naming three of their albums will not be sufficient, as you are tasked with answering questions spanning two decades, from the group’s formation to the members’ endeavors after The Beatles. Questions come from categories of songs, movies, history, on their own, albums and singles, and The Beatles in America. This is a great edition for music lovers, especially those that suffer from Beatlemania.
3 Trivial Pursuit 2000s
Similar to the Back to the 80s edition, this one is all about a defining decade. The 2000s were great times for technological advancements, and there were some amazing games in the early 2000s. In Trivial Pursuit 2000s, questions cover the years from 2000 to 2016 when the game was released.
The 2000s edition has fewer questions than most of the others on this list with just 1,800, spanning the categories of sports and hobbies, entertainment, events, science and tech, places, and the arts. This is a great option for players as it is not so highly specific that it requires a deep interest in the theme to get answers right but rather tests someone’s general knowledge of recent years.
2 Trivial Pursuit Harry Potter
Harry Potter has a few editions in the Trivial Pursuit catalog, comprising a full board game and two “bite-size” releases. This bite-size version is perfect for travel and quick games, ideal for those who want to play a match without committing to a full-length one.
This version includes fewer questions coming in at just 600 to retain its small size and portability. For this reason, a board is absent from the game. Instead of navigating a board, you roll the colored die to determine what category question you get, which speeds up the pace of the game.
1 Trivial Pursuit Master Game – Genus Edition (Original)
The original Trivial Pursuit completely deserves a mention. When this game was first released, it was impossible to predict how popular it would be, spawning several versions and being enjoyed by friends and family globally for such a prolonged period of time.
Some of the questions may be outdated now, but it is still worth the time playing to see how such a simple game became an international sensation.
