The latest trailer for EA DICE’s upcoming multiplayer shooter, Battlefield 1, focuses on the development of World War I weapons that are authentic, yet visceral.
It appears that EA and Battlefield 1 developer DICE are getting ready for the marketing blitz that will lead to the multiplayer shooter’s launch in October. Today saw the release of the first official trailer since the deluge of media that dropped at E3. Appearing to be the first in a series of gameplay trailers, “Weapons,” as the title implies, gives an introductory look at Battlefield 1’s selection of guns and melee armaments. Mostly, though, the trailer is just a great excuse to see Battlefield 1 in motion again.
The “Weapons” trailer also briefly provides some developer commentary regarding the direction EA and DICE are taking regarding weapon design and development. Christofer Brandtieng, a vehicle and weapon animator, offered perhaps the clearest perspective on the studio’s goals in Battlefield 1, saying, “We’re not recreating the old, the past, we’re taking that as an inspiration and then we’re trying to take this into a modern perspective.”
Lars Gustavsson, Battlefield 1’s Design Director, says, “It’s not just another M16 that we’re about to build.” He makes clear that while the game is set in World War 1, Battlefield 1 is not just another World War throwback shooter. The team is taking these weapons, authentically recreated as EA DICE has proven to be capable of, and prioritizing the kind of visceral, modern shooter that fans expect of the franchise.
