Fans of classic role-playing games are having a collective fit about the imminent release of Baldur’s Gate 3, and it’s easy to understand why. The Baldur’s Gate franchise was one of the most popular RPG games of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The game mechanics were based on Dungeons & Dragons rules and it was one of the first attempts to successfully bring tabletop games to the world of video games, paving the way for the whole genre as it went along.

Taking players to the Forgotten Realms, a popular D&D gaming module that was also the setting for the novelizations of the game, players could create their own character and choose different party members. Their moral alignment was a trait to consider, as certain party members will fight amongst themselves or even leave your party if there’s a conflict. It helps to know the alignments of your potential party members in advance so you can make better choices about party composition.

7 Valygar Corlatha - Neutral Good

Like several other NPCs, Valgar Corlatha is accessible via a quest that starts in the Government District. Talk to either the little boy or the government agent to get a quest for the Umar Hills, then complete the Planar Sphere quest with him as a member of your party.

Valygar is a Ranger with a backstab ability, which is handy, but he doesn’t get along with mages in general and hates evil ones in particular. His most compelling ability isn’t in gameplay but in lore. Legend has it that he’s the only NPC that can keep Jan Jansen quiet.

6 Keldorn Firecam - Lawful Good

Keldorn can be found in the government distract as part of the Unseeing Eye quest. He’s got some high stats, with the exception of his Dexterity, which can be fixed with some simple gear adjustments. Get him a powerful sword to use with those high stats and he’s a powerful fighter, plus he has healing spells and bonuses when fighting the undead. His righteous alignment combined with his status as a Paladin Inquisitor means that Keldorn doesn’t always play well with others. He has a special hate-on for Drow, in particular, so watch out if Viconia is in the party.

5 Minsc - Chaotic Good

Minsc, the Ranger with the most unique pet in gaming history, has become the mascot of this franchise. His Chaotic Good alignment gives the protagonist some wiggle room, but he won’t tolerate certain Evil characters and prefers quests that take place outside of town.

Minsc is one of the strongest characters in the game, so he can carry all the gear, plus he can use a variety of weapons and a few limited Ranger healing spells. The comments he makes in the party can be pretty funny, too.

4 Nalia De’Arnise - Chaotic Good

Nalia serves two purposes in the game; she’s an intrinsic part of a quest that starts Chapter 2 and she replaces the Mage-Thief that you just lost, Imoen. She’s more of a Mage than a Thief, but it’s still enough to guide you through the secret doors and booby traps that guard her dad’s loot. Protagonists that play a Fighter, Barbarian, or Monk can take over her family’s keep and give themselves a steady source of income throughout the game.

3 Mazzy Fentan - Lawful Good

Mazzy isn’t exactly a Paladin. She’s a Fighter, but she has a few Paladin abilities, plus their Lawful Good alignment. She doesn’t get along with Evil characters but will tolerate them, unlike other NPCs who tend to complain. Players can find her imprisoned in the Umar Hills, and upon being rescued she offers to join the party. Mazzy is an independent character who likes the outdoors and has five points in her bow skill, so once you get her a decent weapon she’s lethal.

2 Aerie - Lawful Good

Aerie is one of the more versatile Clerics in the game, mainly because she’s also a powerful Mage. That means she has both high wisdom and intelligence. If you need something identified, hand it to Aerie. Players can find her fairly early in the game if they choose. The quest to get her in the party starts in the circus tent, located next to where the party appears in Waukeen’s Promenade. It’s an easy quest that’s worth doing just for the experience points.

Being Lawful Good but rather naive, Aerie doesn’t like sharing her space with Evil characters, and she won’t let you forget it. She especially hates Drow which means Viconia and everything in the Underdark, and tries to talk the protagonist into kicking characters like Edwin and Jorgan out of the party.

1 Imoen - Neutral Good

One of the characters carried over from the original game, Imoen is the protagonist’s best friend. Her abduction at the end of Chapter 1 sets the rest of the story in motion. She’s also one of the strongest characters in the game when it comes to skills and abilities.

Imoen is a multiclass character who levels as both a Thief and a Mage. She’s the most powerful Thief in the game with a Good alignment, and it’s essential to have a Thief in the party. Despite the fact that she’s a Good alignment, she’ll stay by the player’s side regardless of their own alignment or those of other party members.
