Yes, it is just a week, but after months of patience, we can hardly blame you for being a bit peeved that Baldur’s Gate 3 is being delayed until October 6th.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that Larian Studios is being totally upfront with us about what’s causing the delay.
“Our guiding principle for early access is that it’s fine for there to be smaller bugs or a few things that are lacking polish, but it needs to offer a fun gameplay experience with as few crashes as possible,” Larian wrote on Twitter.
“We’re nearly there but we had a few unexpected delays, and we still have some stability issues we’re sifting through. Because of the delays, our transitions are also later than expected and we want to ensure localization for the announced Early Access languages is strong enough for our international fans to have a good time.”
Larian said they expect that an extra week will allow them to “triple check stability and localization” in order to ensure Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t have any large issues on launch day. They also noted that they’ve enlisted the help of a “World Tester” AI which “plays through the game at incredible speed, stress testing everything and pushing it to its limits.”
The World Tester is currently playing through the game, and although Larian has no illusions that an AI could be a better playtester than thousands of ravenous fans, they do want to make sure their fancy bot doesn’t run into any major problems before they unleash their game on the public.
That AI also ensured that Baldur’s Gate 3’s PC specs are on the money. Released last August, Larian indicated that they’ve zeroed in on their minimum requirements and that even gamers with a modest system should have no problem playing the game, albeit at reduced graphics capacity.
Baldur’s Gate 3 heads into early access on Google Stadia, GOG, and Steam on October 6th.
