Mattel’s Hot Wheels division was on fire at San Diego Comic-Con@Home. On Friday they held a video panel featuring some amazing prototypes and concept art for everything from Star Wars to Mario Kart to Rugrats (Say what??) to a beautiful collection of Overwatch Character Cars.
Hot Wheels first used the brand “Character Car” in 2010 with release of Toy Story 3 cars and race sets. However, the concept really began in 1979 when a partnership with Marvel resulted in a very successful range of popular Marvel Super Hero Hot Wheels entered the production line. Familiar four-color heroes such as Spider-Man, Captain America, and The Hulk became collectible cars and sets. Over the past 41 years, millions of Character Cars have roared off the shelves - and now familiar Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch characters join the club.
The Overwatch Character Cars should arrive at retail stores and the Blizzard online shop sometime in Spring 2021. Or, in other words - not soon enough!
DVa’s ride radiates speed and bubblegum, a perfect K-Tuner reflection of the Korean e-sports idol. The color scheme matches her uniform, complete with all her personable stickers, antennae, and adorable whisker paint.
Genji’s slick and streamlined sports car could have leapt up the Grid from Tron in micro-Hot-Wheels green glory. Like it’s namesake, this Character Car looks super fast and super sharp, and ready to pounce. All that’s missing is a giant, impractical sword sticking off the hood. Impractical and awesome.
Reaper’s signature Character Car looks like a bat out of Hell incarnate. Fans of the man in black should squee on sight of this bad boy super-charged Hot Wheel. Reaper’s Reapermobile may the the most immediately recognizable of all the concepts revealed so far. Impressive. Most impressive.
No doubt a tight race for the recognition award, Soldier 76’s muscle car should leave little doubt who it’s modeled after. Rough, ready to rumble, and hearkening to an older era compared to the advanced sci-fi inspired Overwatch setting, the Soldier 76 looks like its still got it.
Tracer’s vehicular doppelgänger blends zip and punch in a tiny package. This Character Car sports her signature chronal accelerator and pulse pistols right on the hood. The stretched glass of the windshield makes the car look perpetually in motion, even though it’s standing still. Much like the feisty Brit herself.
All the cars look amazing and wallet-tempting. The renditions of their default uniforms begs one question - will the line include any variant costumes from the game?
And we can only hope all the rest of the Overwatch team’s Character Cars are forthcoming in further waves. Fingers crossed!
