Since the announcement, Obsidian’s new fantasy RPG Avowed was considered by many as an answer to Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls games. It may not be the case after all, as Xbox boss now says the titles are “very different.”

Unsurprisingly, Avowed missed E3 this year, so we still know very little about the upcoming title set in Pillars of Eternity world of Eora. Avowed is an epic first-person role-playing game, which will feature an in-depth magic system and a large open-world in a fantasy setting. Despite such scarce details one year after the announcement, many fans believe the game will be sort of like The Elder Scrolls 6, judging from what we already saw in the debut trailer.

During the recent IGN Unlocked 500 podcast (via PureXbox), Microsoft’s Phil Spencer answered the question of whether Avowed will be the Xbox version of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls franchise (which is a little odd now, considering The Elder Scrolls 6 could possibly be an Xbox exclusive). According to Spencer, that’s hardly the case here, as “the games are very different.” Spencer went on to say there’s going to be some “distinct differences” between Avowed and traditional Elder Scrolls games. Of course, at this point, all we can do is guess what those differences exactly are.

Spencer added he wants to give Obsidian Entertainment the time and resources to build the most amazing game the studio has ever built, and that’s quite a thing when you remember we are talking about the devs of Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, and Tyranny here. Phil Spencer personally thinks Avowed is going to be an “awesome entrance,” and simply a “fantastic” game when it comes out. You can check him saying it here at around the 37-minute mark:

Avowed is expected for a 2023 release date, although there is currently no confirmation on the year that this game will arrive. The Elder Scrolls 6 shouldn’t be expected soon enough either, as Todd Howard has recently confirmed the title is still in the design phase, meaning the game is years away from being launched.
