Auto Chess is making its way to the PlayStation 4 this coming October. During Sony’s State of Play event this month, we got a first look at what Auto Chess on the PlayStation 4 would look like, and boy does it look fun.
Auto Chess started as a game variant for the game Defense of the Ancients 2, which itself started as a community-created mod for World of Warcraft. In the game, you play against seven other players as you try to protect your chessboard, although this isn’t normal chess. Each player can choose pieces from a community pool, which the developers hope to expand upon after the game’s release.
According to the PlayStation blog, each piece will come from a certain class and will have certain abilities. These pieces become more powerful when you keep them within their same race or class and build synergy that can help you defeat your opponents. Each piece also has three tiers to upgrade through, though this will cost you. Every time you want to upgrade, you will be exchanging three pieces for one stronger piece.
The fights on the board happen automatically, so all you need to do is make sure you are keeping an eye on your resources and making upgrades at the right time. Of course, your opponents are doing the same thing, so the further in the game you get, the stronger your enemies are going to be. Finding the right synergies is going to be the key to defeating your opponents, but it is going to take a lot of experimentation.
While this is not a new game, it is exciting to see that it’s making its way to console and bringing new players to the game. A while ago we wrote about different franchises that are perfect for Auto Chess, which the devs must have seen because they said, “we will also prepare new game versions and various PlayStation exclusive items as a mysterious surprise for everyone.” Who knows what these surprises are going to be, but the possibilities are nearly endless. If were ever interested in chess or resource management games like Magic: The Gathering, you’re probably going to like this game. Be sure to check it out when it comes to consoles this October.
