If you can believe it, both Persona 5: Royal and Persona 5: Scramble have been fairly successful. The niche series from developer/publisher Atlus has become something of a cult hit over the years and recent sales numbers from both the re-release and spin-off/sequel have sold better than the company expected.
Atlus posted its financial earnings report for its first-quarter fiscal earnings and the two Persona titles along with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim have sold far better than anticipated. Atlus didn’t mention any specific numbers, but that’s likely good news for Sega. With Atlus now under its umbrella, it obviously wants to hear things like how Persona is doing well.
The recent release of Persona 4: Golden on Steam has also been a big hit. With the series previously console exclusive (and practically a PlayStation staple), Atlus will likely continue to bring games to the PC in the future. Now we patiently wait for the release of Persona 5: Royal on Steam to suck up another 100+ hours of our lives.
While all of the news about Persona is great, not everything was rosy for Atlus last quarter. The company reported a net loss of around 423.8 million yen -roughly $3.93 million USD-. This loss was mostly attributed to changing hands from Index Co. LTD to Sega. Despite that, Atlus believes it has contributed an overall positive gain to Sega’s business and it will likely continue to do so moving forward.
With Persona being such a bit hit now, the chances are much higher of Persona 6 happening sooner rather than later. It would also be nice to hear news of localization for Persona 5: Scramble, the Dynasty Warriors spin-off sequel. Released earlier this year in Japan for both PS4 and Switch, it’s puzzling why Atlus isn’t capitalizing on the hype to get that released overseas.
Whatever the reason for its belated arrival, don’t expect to see the Persona series sail off into the sunset. It’s practically become Atlus’ main staple now and we’ll only be hearing more about going forward. I’m not sure if I can deal with a full-on RPG again, but I’ll happily welcome wacky spin-offs like Persona 4: Dancing All Night.
